The Wind Beneath My Wings

Perpetrator: Bette Midler
Highest Chart Position: #1, 1987
Sap Elements: Self-indulgence, arrangement, arrogance

The breathy synth background, fake piano & string section, and heavily echoed snare immediately identify the song as a sap candidate. The precious lyrics confirm its sad fate. Acknowledging the importance of close friends is something we should do more often; however, it's tacky to label your friends "the little people" while thanking them for your success. One who does so may someday find herself becalmed -- and falling.

The title of this song always makes me think of armpit farts.

*Ali MacGraw's disease: Named for Ms. MacGraw's performance in the 1970 film "Love Story," in which she wasted prettily away of an unnamed terminal illness. Come to think of it, the theme from "Love Story" should be on the Sap List ...
