Or Why Isn't "Brandy" on the List?
Believe it or not, the Sap Appreciation Party does have some standards. To be included, a song must:
- Have been a hit on the Billboard pop chart. What would be the point of listing an obscure album track
that no one has ever heard? Anyone can write a sappy song. It takes talent to write a sappy song and crack the
Hot 100 with it.
- Be approved by the members of the SAP. We actually discuss these things -- usually over
beers and french fries at the local brew pub, but discussion is discussion.
Songs that have been rejected for inclusion:
- Anything by The Carpenters -- After much debate, we decided they are just too easy a target.
- "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney -- Dumb, but not especially sappy.
- "Little Green Apples," "Wives and Lovers," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix, "The Autumn of My Life" -- Icky,
self-satisfied songs proving that the men who wrote them know absolutely nothing about women, these didn't qualify
for the Sap List because they weren't major hits.
Songs that should be on the list but aren't (they probably will be after the SAP's next gathering):
- "The Greatest Love of All"
- "You Light Up My Life"
- "Feelings"
