Muskrat Love

Perpetrator: The Captain and Tennille
Highest Chart Position: #4, 1976
Sap Elements: Cuteness, "Ewww" factor, fake muskrat twittering

The Captain & Tennille had a hit in 1976 with their cover of America's "Muskrat Love". Anthropomorphism can only be pushed so far before it becomes cute, and these muskrats have become aw-gee-shucks c*u*t*e. This treatment shouldn't happen to a dog, or muskrats for that matter. Even muskrats should be treated with some dignity. Finally, what does the galloping muskrat ending mean? Have they turned into horses?

Is this allegory, or are they really singing about muskrats? Is this a pop song or a cheesy-ass children's book? Are those weird synthesized squeaky sounds supposed to imitate the mating calls of actual muskrats?

I looked up muskrats on the net. They look a lot like nutria. I guess "Nutria Love" just didn't have the right ring.
