Mr. Deutschendorf's ode to his love for his wife starts promisingly -- just a guitar and his voice -- but the overwhelming profusion of nature imagery quickly leaves us begging the singer to stop. There's a fine love between talking about love and giving your audience Too Much Information, and "Annie's Song" is over the line. The strings don't help. The song is fine, Mr. D.; please sing it just to Annie, though. We don't need to know exactly how much you love her.

Wow, it's starting to look like 1974 was quite a year for sap! Anyway, I argued against including "Annie's Song" on the list; my theory was that it was romantic, not sappy. However, the fact that John Denver (at the time we discussed it, which was before he died) had long since divorced the woman to whom he sang his undying love pushed it over the edge for me.
